Michael Joseph Savage was the first Labour Prime Minister of New Zealand, and is known as the architect of the welfare state. He died in office in 1940. A memorial was built for him over the next few years, and it continues to get significant numbers of visitors.
I thought that at this time when we are not sure which parties will form the next government of New Zealand it was appropriate to look back at one of the most significant PMs we’ve had.
