Dargaville

Day 58, Wednesday 18 October 2017

I took a group of North Harbour Ulyssians to Dargaville today, going there via State Highway 12, which runs west from the south side of the Brynderwyn Range at State Highway 1 to the Wairoa River and then along the river to Dargaville. Dargaville is one of the less prosperous places in New Zealand. On the main street were several Maori Wardens—volunteers who help keep the community safe and assist people in need. I haven’t seen Wardens prominent in other communities.

Some of us returned via State Highway 14, which runs northeast towards Whangarei, with one section containing many tight corners as it climbs a hill. From SH14, Snooks Road is a very pleasant country road heading south with some nice twists. The last three km are easy gravel. From the end of Snooks Road, Maungakaramea Road connects to SH1.

Distance travelled: 418 km. Total distance so far: 8619 km
