Mutukāroa/Hamlins Hill

Day 112, Monday 11 December 2017.

Today I rode to a Regional Park I hadn’t even heard of before. Mutukāroa is the largest non-volcanic hill on the Auckland isthmus. It was a Māori pā, well-sited to defend the portage on the narrow bit of land between the Manukau and Waitematā harbours. Now it is mostly farmland, with a small herd of cattle clustered together at the top of one of the foothills. There’s some patches of bush with walking tracks, and the birdsong in these areas is almost enough to drown out the roar of the nearby motorway. There are views over Māngere and the isthmus.

Distance travelled: 26 km. Total distance so far: 15,861 km
