Riding in the rain

Day 137, Friday 5 January 2018.

It’s been raining all day today, so I did a short ride and concentrated on my techniques for riding in the wet. My bikes have ABS but no other rider aids such as traction control. Rider aids certainly help in an emergency, but my aim is to keep any emergency from developing. In the rain, I reduce my acceleration, brake gently and early, and limit my lean angles. I keep a good distance behind the vehicle in front so I have more reaction time if they do anything unexpected, try to be aware of all the traffic around me and anticipate what they might do, and I keep out of other vehicle’s blind spots. With a bit of care and good wet weather gear, riding in the rain can be fun.

Distance travelled: 45 km. Total distance so far: 18,134 km
