Mad dogs and Ulyssians

Day 173, Saturday 10 February 2018.

Tomorrow is the Auckland branch of Ulysses big charity run to support the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust. Today the marshals for the event—the lead rider, the corner markers and the tail-end Charlie—met to discuss final plans for traffic management and corner marking. We met at the starting point for the ride—Mercer motorway service area—and followed the route, finishing near the Clevedon Hotel.

It rained steadily during our ride, and eventually the water found its way through my wet weather gear, as seems inevitable, so I was riding with trickles of water going down my legs. It wasn’t a fun ride, but it was necessary to make sure everything goes smoothly tomorrow. At the time we rode, the weather forecast for tomorrow looked even worse, and we were pessimistic about the numbers who would turn out, but the forecast has significantly improved since.

Distance travelled: 150 km. Total distance so far: 22,937 km
