Day 179, Friday 16 February 2018.
I rode along twisty country roads to Stillwater, a quiet little locality on the opposite side of the Weiti River from Whangaparaoa. The main road is Duck Creek Road, and where it ends there is a small reserve, but access to the river is blocked by a motor camp. The Okura Bush walkway leaves from this point. One hundred metres down the walkway, there’s an unsignposted track to the left which gives access to the river, but the riverside is quite muddy.
There’s a proposal to build a bridge across to Whangaparaoa to ease that peninsula’s traffic problems. I suspect this would change the backwater feel of Stillwater, so I’m glad to have explored the area before it is affected to a great extent.
