Orakei Basin

Day 200, Friday 9 March 2018.

Orakei Basin is a tidal lagoon formed from the explosion of a volcano 85,000 years ago. There’s a walkway going around it, which follows the shore of the lagoon for part of its length, runs a few metres inland through bush for other parts, goes up and well inland a couple of times, and has two boardwalks across the water, one following the frequently-used railway line for almost a kilometre. There’s a sculpture at one point. In short, it’s a varied walk. I recommend it.

Distance travelled: 20 km. Total distance so far: 26,124 km
