Day 255, Thursday 3 May 2018
I rode to Matukutūreia, also called McLaughlins Mountain, the southernmost cone in the Auckland Volcanic Field. I saw this cone on an earlier trip to Puhinui Reserve and decided to explore it.
The cone has been extensively quarried since the 1850s, and was a pa site before that, with terraces still visible. It looks very battered. Signs around it warn of falling rocks, and there is no obvious pedestrian access. Presumably it isn’t safe for inexperienced people in motorcycle boots to climb.
Distance travelled: 43 km. Total distance so far: 33,751 km
