Day 319, Friday 6 July 2018
Most of the trails through the Waikatere Ranges have been closed to prevent the spread of Kauri dieback disease, but today I walked along one which is still open. The Upper Nihotupu Walk starts at a rough carpark off Piha Road and runs through native forest for a few hundred metres, then joins a gravel road going down to the Upper Nihotupu Dam. Along the way are a couple of nice waterfalls, and the dam’s storage lake. It’s a pleasant 40 minute walk each way.
Distance travelled: 52 km. Total distance so far: 40,765 km
